Tour Description
Book our Assisi tour from Rome and discover the enchanting town of St. Francis and St. Clare.
1. Assisi, a pearl in Umbria
Assisi is a lovely town in Umbria, a region close to Tuscany and Lazio, famous for its gorgeous landscapes and unforgettable architecture.
It is also one of the religious hearts of Italy, as it’s the birthplace of St. Francis, the most important Italian saint and the patron of Italy, and St. Clare.
Assisi is a favorite destination for both art lovers (it’s a UNESCO world heritage site), and for travelers who want to visit moving religious sites.
It’s the perfect town to visit on a day trip during the Jubilee of 2025.
Enjoy an early departure from your accommodation with your private driver, and arrive in the picturesque Umbrian town where you will meet your private guide.
We continue, on foot, to explore this magnificent hillside suburb, and emerge ourselves in its early beginnings, following the story of humble saints, the Catholic Church, and dangerous medieval times.
2. Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi
Our Assisi Tour will continue with a visit to the Basilica of St. Francis, undoubtedly the highlight of the tour, which is actually two churches in one.
Beyond its religious significance, the basilica also houses remarkable artworks and architecture.
The upper church features 28 frescoes by Giotto, depicting scenes from the life of the saint.
Meanwhile, the lower church showcases works by artists such as Cimabue, Lorenzetti, and Martini.
The lower sanctuary is the final resting place of Saint Francis himself.
Your private tour guide will teach you about the Saint’s life, the architecture, and the genius of Giotto, one of the greatest painters of all time.
3. Basilica of St. Clare
The next stop of your Assisi Tour will be the Basilica of St. Clare, located in Piazza di Santa Chiara, which commands an impressive view over the Umbrian valley.
Constructed with bands of white and pink Mount Subasio stone, the basilica is the focal point of the adjoining convent dedicated to Saint Clare, the first and most faithful disciple of Saint Francis.
It was built in her honour, next to the ancient church of San Giorgio, the site of the first burial of both Saint Francis in 1226 and Saint Clare in 1253.
The convent is the home to her remains and sacred relics such as the wooden Cross through which Jesus was to have spoken to Saint Francis in San Damiano, ordering him to repair the church, only for Francis to later realize Jesus meant the entire church itself, his mystical body.
4. Via San Francesco and Piazza del Comune
Your Assisi tour also includes a tour of the city center: Via San Francesco, which brings us to Piazza del Comune – the ancient Roman Forum.
Here, we find the Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, once the Temple of Minerva.
The original temple was built in the 1st century BC by Gnaeus Caesius and Titus Caesius Priscus, two of the city’s chief magistrates, and dedicated to the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva.
From the outside, it appears to be a perfectly preserved example of a Roman temple, however, as we enter, we find it houses a Catholic church, a quaint little sanctuary with impressive ceiling frescos.
Your professional tour guide will tell you about the Roman origins of the city, and its transformation into a marvelous Medieval town.
After visiting Santa Maria sopra Minerva, you will probably be hungry.
Your guide will happily recommend a local restaurant and some activities to do after lunch.
Assisi is also famous for its artisan shops, which you can visit in your free time before meeting your driver again and heading back to Rome after a wonderful day in Umbria, the “Green Heart of Italy”.
If you’re in Rome for a few days, don’t miss the chance to visit the gorgeous Assisi with a private driver and a personal guide.
