Tour Description
Private Rome Food Tour in Testaccio, a tour for foodies
During our Private Rome Food Tour in Testaccio, we will take you to a traditional Italian market and to one of the best restaurants in the neighborhood.
We will show you the vegetables and meat stands, talk to the sellers who have worked in the market for many years and, of course, let you try some of the most traditional Roman dishes and products.
1. Testaccio Market
Your private tour guide will pick you up at your hotel and you will go to Testaccio.
Our Rome Food Tour will start from the local market, which dates back to the 1920s.
Testaccio market combines the past and present of Italian food culture. It’s a 100-year-old market, but it has been recently moved to a brand new, comfortable structure.
Many of the stands have been owned by the same families since the market opened. Others are, instead, much newer: the market has evolved over the decades and it’s now also a meeting place, where you can see students, workers, locals, and foreigners buy fruit, meat, fish, fresh pasta, or to eat at one of the many food stands.
You’ll discover how Italians approach local food, whether it’s for a sit-down lunch or a snack on the go.
Your private guide will give you an introduction to the neighborhood, which is one of the most important in Rome.
Then, you will explore the market and see some of the most typical stands.
- Supplì
Your journey through the Roman food culture will start with a classic appetizer: Supplì. It’s a deep-fried ball of rice with tomato or cacio e pepe sauce, and it will be cooked right before you eat it.
The Romans are obsessed with it, and you will immediately understand why.
- Roman Pizza
But, Rome is also famous for its pizza. Even if pizza was invented in Naples, the Romans have created a crunchier, thinner version of it that they’re very proud of.
Have a slice of Roman pizza at one of the most popular stands in the market, and learn about the difference between the Roman and Neapolitan versions!
- Authentic Roman Sandwich
The third stop of your Rome food tour will be one of the most famous stands in Testaccio: Mordi e Vai. Its owner is Sergio Esposito, a retired butcher, who serves sandwiches made from very traditional recipes.
Allesso di scottona, oxtail, meatballs, ragù, coratella: your guide will tell you about the Roman food tradition and help you choose the perfect sandwich for you. If you’re still hungry, you can try one of Sergio’s legendary polpette fritte, deep-fried patties of seasoned shredded beef.
Afterwards, you’ll leave the market and take a walk along the Testaccio hill, also known as Monte dei Cocci (the “pottery-shards hill”).
This is one of the most interesting sights in Rome: it’s a mountain made almost exclusively of ancient Roman pottery vases, gathered here after they were unloaded from the ships that arrived at the port of Rome from all over the Mediterranean.
It’s a fascinating and unique site, and it’s still part of the neighborhood’s daily life. Many houses, bars, and shops are nestled along the slopes of the hill.
Then, you will walk through the neighborhood to experience first-hand the Romans’s daily life.
2. Carbonara and Amatriciana at “da Bucatino” Restaurant
Soon, you will reach “da Bucatino”, an old-school Roman restaurant: the perfect place to try two of the best local dishes: Amatriciana and Carbonara (here you can find an article about the history of this dish)
What are the ingredients of a real Carbonara? What kind of meat are you supposed to use when you make it? How can you create the deliciousAmatriciana sauce? Ask your guide or the restaurant staff and make the most of your Rome food tour!
At lunch, you’ll also try a red wine from Lazio, the region of Rome, which pairs best with these kinds of pasta.
“Da Bucatino” is also famous for its desserts: tiramisù, ricotta e pere, and many others. Leave a bit of space in your stomach for the dessert!
No Italian lunch can end without an espresso: it’ll be the perfect finale to your discovery of the Roman cuisine.
Is the Alfredo sauce really Italian? Why can’t you find pasta with chicken in Rome’s restaurants? Do Italians ever drink cappuccino after lunch?
All your questions about the Italian food culture will be answered, and you’ll be left with unforgettable (and delicious!) memories of your Roman holiday.
