Tour Description
What could be better than a walk through the historic city center of Rome?
Join a Tour Professional on our Rome Walking Tour and enjoy a stroll through the beautiful streets of the Eternal City.
1. The Spanish Steps
You will start your Rome Walking Tour in the Spanish Steps area – one of the most historic and elegant neighborhoods in Rome.
This quarter was very popular among writers, poets and artists. Lord Byron and John Keats lived right in Piazza di Spagna (the Italian name for the square next to the Spanish Steps). Many other English-speaking visitors frequented the area, stopping for a coffee at the famous Caffè Greco (still open today!)
So why do we call them the “Spanish Steps” and not “English Steps”? No spoilers, but you can ask your private guide!
Nowadays, Piazza di Spagna is the main high-end shopping district in Rome city center. Here you’ll see the latest creations by Valentino, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and many other famous designers. If you’re looking for an excuse to splurge, this is the place to be.
But above all, the Spanish Steps area is simply one of the most beautiful in Rome.
Bernini, Borromini, Specchi and many other great architects contributed to the design of the neighborhood. This area boasts several gorgeous buildings like the Propaganda Fide palace, the Basilica of the Trinity of the Mountains and, of course, the famous Steps!
2. The Trevi Fountain
A visit to the Trevi Fountain – the biggest and most famous in Rome – is the second part of our Rome Walking Tour.
Have you ever wondered why people throw coins in the Trevi Fountain?
It’s a ritual that guarantees your return to the Eternal City. After you see the Trevi Fountain you’ll certainly want to come back, so make sure you toss a coin in too!
During your visit, you’ll take the time to admire the Trevi Fountain close up, admiring every detail. This astonishing structure was built in the 18th century by the architect Niccolò Salvi, and its water comes from an ancient Roman aqueduct that still works today.
Your personal guide will share the story of the construction of the aqueduct, and will help you to truly appreciate this incredible architectural masterpiece.
3. The Pantheon
Next, it’s time to visit one of the most impressive buildings in the world: the Pantheon. This is one of the absolute highlights of our Rome Walking Tour.
In the late 1st century AD, Rome was ruled by its first emperor, Augustus. But being the sole ruler of the empire was not enough for him. He wanted more – he wanted to be a god.
That’s what the Pantheon was supposed to be – a temple to worship Augustus as a god on earth while he was still alive.
But Augustus was too intelligent to let his own ego ruin him. He soon understood that the Romans would not approve of his plan, so he decided to change the name of the temple. He called it “Pantheon” – the temple of all the gods.
The building you see today, however, is not the original.
Lightning struck in 110 AD, causing a fire that destroyed the Pantheon. It had to be completely rebuilt. Emperor Hadrian commissioned a grand reconstruction – the new Pantheon would be even bigger and more monumental!
Gargantuan granite columns, carved from one piece of rock, were brought from Egypt. Bronze was used to decorate the ceiling of the portico. But the most impressive part of the building is the dome – a huge cupola made of concrete. It was the biggest in the world back then, and is still the biggest in Rome.
Our Tour Expert will tell you the story of this magnificent building – one of the wonders of the world. You’ll also learn why the Pantheon is now a Catholic church, and how this transformation was the secret to its survival.
4. Piazza Navona
The final stop of your Rome Walking Tour will be Piazza Navona, a breathtakingly beautiful Baroque square.
The two greatest architects in Rome, Bernini and Borromini, contributed to its design and construction. Their rivalry pushed both of them to do their very best work.
Borromini designed the façade of the St. Agnes Basilica, while Bernini built the monumental Fountain of the Four Rivers.
Four characters, representing rivers, lean on the sides of the fountains. Each statue is also a representation of a continent: Asia, Africa, Europe, and America. But where’s Australia? Your tour guide has the answer!
