1.Orvieto: A Breathtaking Hilltop Town
Orvieto was founded by the Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago under the name Velzna and played a central role in Etruscan religious life.
According to ancient sources, this was the location of the Fanum Voltumnae, the sacred sanctuary where the leaders of the twelve main Etruscan cities gathered to discuss politics, religion, and common affairs.
Although the city was destroyed by the Romans in 264 BC, Orvieto flourished again during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, when many of its churches, palaces, and piazzas were built.
Today, the town sits dramatically atop a tufa hill, whose sheer cliffs form natural defensive walls. From above, Orvieto overlooks a stunning landscape of green fields, vineyards, and rows of cypress trees, stretching across the Umbrian countryside.
