The Restoration of Bernini’s Canopy (Baldacchino): A New Chapter for Rome’s Masterpiece

Bernini's Canopy

After four years of careful restoration work, the monumental Canopy by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, located in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, has been fully restored to its former glory. This incredible masterpiece, completed in 1633, has long been one of the most iconic symbols of Baroque art and architecture. Standing 29 meters tall, the Canopy acts as a grand canopy above St. Peter’s tomb and the papal altar, symbolizing the grandeur of the Catholic Church and the power of the Papacy.

The recent restoration was a monumental effort to preserve this intricate work of art, which had suffered from years of exposure to environmental factors, including pollution and the natural aging process of its materials. Over time, the gilded bronze structure had dulled, and its intricate details had faded. The restoration team meticulously cleaned the surface, repaired structural damage, and used advanced techniques to restore the precious bronze elements, allowing the Canopy to shine once again in all its glory.

This restoration is not just about preserving a piece of art—it is about preserving a cultural legacy that has stood the test of time. As one of Bernini’s defining works, the Canopy is a testament to his genius and the artistic vision of the Baroque period, combining architecture, sculpture, and decorative arts in a single, awe-inspiring creation.

Many of the masterpieces inside St. Peter’s Basilica are currently under restoration, including the Altar of the Chair of St. Peter.

During the restoration, the Chair of St. Peter, usually kept inside the Altar, is shown to the public.
