Tour Description
What does it feel like to travel back in time? Join us on our Skip-The-Line Colosseum Tour and explore the heart of ancient Rome.
This private tour includes the three most important archaeological sites in the Eternal City: the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Palatine Hill, with skip-the-line access to all of them.
1. The Palatine Hill
We’ll start from the Palatine Hill, which is the most important of the seven hills of Rome.
More than 2,700 years ago a woman called Rea Silvia gave birth to twins. But her evil uncle Amulius forced her to abandon her children and ordered a servant to drown them in the Tiber river. The servant didn’t have the courage to commit murder, so he put the babies in a basket and left them to be carried away by the current.
After floating along the river for many miles, the basket ended up in the Velabrum swamp. A she-wolf saw the baby twins, cold and hungry, and suckled them, saving them from certain death.
Shortly afterwards, the shepherd Faustulus passed by. He took the babies with him, and raised them as his own sons in his house on the Palatine.
The twins were called Romulus and Remus.
Years later, Romulus founded a city on the same hill where he and his brother had been raised. This was the beginning of Rome ― the origins of a glorious city that would later become an empire.
Centuries later, the first Roman emperor Augustus built his palace on the Palatine Hill. From this moment on, the Palatine became the official residence of the rulers of Rome.
Our tour guides will show you the gargantuan ruins of the imperial palaces, where the emperors lived and died. From here, they ruled the Roman world.
Because of its elevated position, the hill also offers breathtaking views of the city, in particular of the Roman Forum, which is the second stop of our Colosseum Tour.
2. The Roman Forum
The Forum was the most important square in ancient Rome, the core of Roman public life. Here the Romans gathered to listen to the speeches of important public figures like Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony, and Cicero. They also came here to vote, to go to the market, to worship the gods, and to attend trials.
Roman politicians invested in the construction of massive, beautiful buildings that turned the Forum into the most monumental neighborhood in the world.
Here, the emperors and the generals celebrated their victories with huge parades called triumphs, during which the legions marched and displayed the prisoners and the spoils ― the treasures of the defeated enemies.
It was the neighborhood where Julius Caesar lived for the last years of his life. You will walk on the very same roads that he walked on. It’s also where his body was burned on a gigantic pyre built by the crowds after his murder.
3. The Colosseum
The last site you will visit is the Colosseum, without a doubt the most impressive building in Rome.
Your professional tour guide will tell you about its construction ― one of the greatest accomplishments of mankind ― and about the bloody fights that took place in it.
Who were the gladiators, and how did they live? How often did they fight, and what happened to them when they won? Did they really flood the Colosseum to have naval battles? All your questions will be answered, and you’ll go back home feeling like you’ve spent a day in ancient Rome.
There’s no better way to visit the Colosseum than with a private tour, led by a real expert, who can bring the past to life. Don’t miss the chance to explore these unique archaeological sites with us, and make the most of your time in the Eternal City.
