Florence
If you want to experience the best of Italy, from food to culture, Florence is unmissable.
The capital of Tuscany has an extraordinary tradition of art, architecture, literature, and science.
It is the hometown of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Dante, Machiavelli, and many other great artists.
It’s a city full of artworks, resembling an open-air museum. If you only have one day to explore, it can be hard to decide what to see. Where to start?
We’ve selected the best for you.
Our Florence in one day Tour is the full experience – all the highlights of this extraordinary city.
1. Piazza Duomo
Your day in Florence begins at your hotel, where your guide will pick you up.
After a short walk through the picturesque streets of the city center, you’ll reach Piazza Duomo.
The square is dominated by the magnificent cathedral (known as the Duomo), one of the most important Gothic churches in Italy. Its most remarkable feature is the vast dome, which is one of the masterpieces of Italian architecture.
The dome was designed by one of the greatest artists to have ever lived: Brunelleschi.
He was a revolutionary architect, who changed art history forever.
Your guide will tell you the story of the construction of the cathedral and the dome, and help you fully appreciate its beauty and history.
You’ll learn how Brunelleschi skilfully mixed ancient tradition with innovative ideas, and helped to define the Renaissance style.
Piazza Duomo also boasts many other important buildings, such as the Baptistery and the Bell Tower by Giotto. Together, they create something truly unique – one of the most beautiful and historic public spaces in the world.
Your Florence in One Day Tour will then continue towards Piazza della Signoria.
2. Piazza della Signoria
Piazza della Signoria (Signoria Square) was the political heart of Florence in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
There’s no better place to learn about the history of Florence, and its fascinating politics.
The main palace in the square, Palazzo della Signoria, was the residence of the rulers of the city.
This is where you’ll learn about the Medici, the most important family in Florence. This family had a profound impact, shaping the city’s culture and identity.
The Medici were the patrons of many great artists, such as Botticelli and Michelangelo, and commissioned some of the artworks that make Florence so unique.
During your visit you’ll admire the impressive facade of Palazzo della Signoria, whose entrance is decorated by a replica of Michelangelo’s David, and by Hercules and Cacus by Baccio Bandinelli.
Next to the square, you’ll see the Loggia dei Lanzi, a portico that displays many beautiful ancient and Renaissance sculptures.
Among them, you’ll also see the impressive bronze statue of Perseus by Benvenuto Cellini.
3. Ponte Vecchio
Your Florence in One Day Tour will continue on Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in Florence.
Ponte Vecchio offers one of the best views of the Arno River. Unusually, it’s also a shopping district – the site of traditional jewelry stores and goldsmiths.
Above the bridge is an impressive corridor that connects the two main residences of the Medici: Palazzo della Signoria and Palazzo Pitti.
By using this private passageway, the rulers of the city could easily go from one palace to another, avoiding the crowds below.
Although Ponte Vecchio is one of the oldest parts of the city, it’s also one of the liveliest, buzzing with tourists and locals. It’s the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere of the historic city center.
4. Michelangelo’s David and the Accademia.
The next stop of your Florence in One Day Tour will be the most famous artwork in town: Michelangelo’s David in the Accademia.
Don’t worry about the lines – you’ll enter quickly with skip-the-line tickets!
Have you ever wondered why David is such an important statue? Your guide will provide a full explanation of this masterpiece, putting it in context. To really understand David, you need to know more about the history of Florence, and the life of one of the city’s greatest artists.
Who was Michelangelo, and why is he renowned as one of the most important artists of all time? You’ll learn about his life, his complex personality, and – of course – his art.
The Accademia is home not only to David, but also other masterpieces by Michelangelo, such as the Prisoners and the Pietà di Palestrina.
It’s one of the best places to experience Michelangelo’s art, and understand why he was such a revolutionary figure during the Renaissance.
After a morning exploring Florence, you’ll probably be ready for a relaxing lunch break. Your guide will happily recommend a restaurant where you can try the famous local cuisine.
Florence is famous for its massive, mouthwatering steaks, but also its pasta tradition – delicious dishes with meaty sauces or truffles. And don’t miss the chance to have a glass of Chianti or Montepulciano!
5. The Uffizi Gallery
The last stop of your Florence in One Day Tour will be the Uffizi Gallery, the most important Renaissance Museum in the world (skip-the-line access).
Your guide will show you paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Botticelli, and many other great artists. They’ll also explain the context in which they were created, so you can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of these masterpieces.
As you stroll through the Uffizi you’ll learn about the Renaissance revolution, and the remarkable people who created this innovative new style of art.
The gallery also has paintings by Giotto, Caravaggio, and many other masters.
There’s no better place to experience Italian art and understand its development, from the Middle Ages to modern times.
