Tour Description
Our Ostia Tour is the perfect choice for all the history buffs and lovers of ruins, but also for travelers who want to escape the crowds and have a relaxing time in a unique setting.
Why visit Pompeii, when you can go to Ostia?
Pompeii is the most famous ancient Roman town in the world. And, for a reason: it’s very well preserved. A tour of Pompeii can give you the impression of traveling back in time and experience the daily life of the Romans.
But, it’s extremely crowded, and it is three hours away from Rome.
Only a few people know that, just a few miles from Rome, there is an archaeological site that is just as fascinating as Pompeii: Ostia Antica.
Ostia was a really important city back in the Roman age. It was the port of Rome and one of the main trading hubs in the Mediterranean.
Any kind of good that reached Rome had to go through Ostia first: grain, olive oil, wine, but also granite obelisks from Egypt and marble statues from Greece, ended their journey throughout the Mediterranean in Ostia and then proceeded towards Rome via the Tiber river or the regular road.
As a town frequented by traders from all over, Ostia was a multi-cultural center that welcomed travelers and residents.
Your Ostia Tour itinerary
Our Ostia Tour will start at your hotel, where your driver and your guide will pick you up. You’ll reach Ostia in about 45 minutes, and then you’ll start your exploration of the city.
First, you will walk through the necropolis, the cemetery of Ostia, which is right outside the city walls.
Then, you’ll enter through the main gate and walk on Ostia main street, whose paving is still really well preserved.
You’ll continue your exploration of the city by visiting the theater, built in the 1st century AD and still in use today. Then, you’ll explore the “Piazzale delle Corporazioni” and proceed towards the Forum, the “heart” of Ostia.
The Forum of Ostia was the city’s main square, and it boasts of some impressive buildings such as the temple of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, and the Temple of Rome and Augustus.
Near the Forum, you will see the baths, which still have lots of its original marble decoration.
What does a Roman bathroom look like? Well, you’ll see one near the Forum, and you’ll probably be shocked…
Then, you will visit a thermopolium, an ancestor of our modern fast-food restaurants, and many other interesting buildings.
During your Ostia Tour, you will see the houses where the ancient Romans lived, and also the temples, the mosaics, and the tombs. All of that in a setting that is not crowded at all, and pretty much ignored by mass-tourism.
Visiting Ostia makes you feel like a traveler, not like a tourist, and it gives you the unique chance to take a break from the modern world and just take a stroll in the Roman age.
