Tour Description
Our Orvieto tour will help you discover Umbria, “the green heart of Italy”, a region between Tuscany and Lazio.
A perfect destination for a day trip from Rome, Florence, or another town in central Italy.
1. Orvieto: a breathtaking town in Umbria
Orvieto was founded by the Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago with the name of Velzna, and it was also the center of the Etruscan religion.
The leaders of the twelve major Etruscan cities gathered here, in the sanctuary called “Fanum Voltumnae”, to discuss politics, the economy, religion, and local politics.
Even though it was destroyed by the Romans in the year 264 B.C., the city thrived during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, when most of its churches, palaces, and piazzas were built.
This lovely town is nestled on a tufa hill whose slopes are so steep that they look like natural walls protecting the city, which looks over the magnificent countryside of Umbria – green fields and rows of cypresses stretching as far as the eye can see.
2. The Duomo and City Center Tour
Your private driver will pick you up at your hotel and you’ll go together to Orvieto.
Here, you will meet your professional, local guide, and start your Orvieto Tour.
Your private guide will help you discover the stunning medieval sights that make this town unique: the famous Duomo, one of the most beautiful churches in Italy; the Moro Tower, built in the 1200s as a symbol of the prosperity of the city; the medieval Palazzo del Popolo, and many others.
Our Orvieto Tour includes skip-the-line tickets to visit the Duomo and the gorgeous Cappella di San Brizio.
This colorful chapel is decorated with world-famous frescoes by Luca Signorelli, representing the Last Judgment.
Even Michelangelo admired the dramatic and unique paintings and was inspired by the unforgettable oeuvre by Luca Signorelli.
Then, your Orvieto tour will continue with an exploration of the city center.
Your guide will lead you through the atmospheric little alleys that make this town so picturesque, with its beautiful squares and incredible views of the surrounding countryside.
After your morning tour, it’s time to sample the local cuisine: Orvieto is famous for its culinary traditions, and you’ll have some free time to try the delicious local dishes and wines.
3. Orvieto Underground Tour
Once you’ve finished your leisurely lunch, your Orvieto Tour will continue with a visit to Orvieto Underground.
Over the centuries, the inhabitants of Orvieto have created a complex network of tunnels underneath the town. You will join a local guide and explore the underground part of Orvieto, with its caves, massive rooms, and intricate tunnels.
Orvieto Underground is really a city below the city, all carved in the natural bedrock.
A delicious gelato at the famous Gelateria Pasqualetti will be the perfect ending to this lovely day in Umbria.
The order of the sites visited might change.
The underground part of the tour (45 min) will be led by a local tour guide, and you’ll have to join a group (they don’t do private tours)
You MUST bring an ID, a passport or a driver’s license to enter the sights.
This is the price for groups from one to six people. If you have more people in your group, please let us know and we’ll create a customized price.
